Kiwanis International is a worldwide, non-profit service organization consisting of men and women who share a common goal: reaching out in our communities, locally and globally, in order to make a difference in the lives of children and the less fortunate. Kiwanis was originally founded in 1920 and has now grown to over 550,000 members in 80 countries, including Kiwanis and our affiliated youth organizations such as K-Kids, Key Club and CKI. For more information about Kiwanis, see the official website at http://www.kiwanis.org.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater North Houston is part of this dynamic worldwide organization, and has been serving the Houston community since May of 1939. Our diverse membership includes business professionals, entrepreneurs, public educators and administrators, and retirees from all races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. From these different backgrounds emerges a common desire – to be of service to others.
Community service is the essence of Kiwanis. The Kiwanis Club of Greater North Houston has chosen to serve our community on several levels, including the following:
· We sponsor Key Clubs at a number of schools in the Houston area which promotes leadership and community service in high school youth.
· We provide funding and/or gifts at Christmas time for a number of elementary schools in HISD that have a large percentage of low-income children.
· We provide deserving students in our community with college Scholarships to help further their education.
· We have historically supported a number of other youth-oriented programs such as Key Clubs, Circle K International (CKI), Boy Scouts of America, the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, and the Criss Cole Children’s Fund.
· We have financially supported the Kiwanis International Worldwide Service Project initiatives which have worked towards the elimination of preventable diseases such as Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), resulting in a profound impact to the health and well-being of children around the world.
